An annual April experiment in creating a Fake Journal~ FAKE: pretend, simulate; counterfeit; to alter.manipulate.
or treat as to impart a false character or appearance.

A fun exercise in pretending to be someone else, maybe in an alternate universe!

Binding My 2014 Fake Journal

To finish my Fake Journal for 2014, I made a
simple cover from brown craft paper over
cardboard, some hand made paper,
and some paper with sponged paint texture.
The hand made paper was gifted to me
by Elizabeth of Altered Book Lover blog.

I added a couple of additional pages to
my Fake Journal...a 'title page' and
a dedication page. These drawings have
little to do with the theme of this
Fake Journal, but are pencil drawings that I
did years ago and never finished.  So, why not?

Finished size is approximately
9" high by 13" wide.
I bound the book using The Cinch, which is a
machine that punches holes and also
crimps a coil binding into the punched holes.
The Cinch was a gift from my daughter, and I
do like being able to bind my own books!
I've used it for scrapbooks and art books.
It's pretty easy to use. I just have to
get out the instructions each time to make
sure I don't make a mistake, and always
punch a practice page to make sure
the holes are centered and lining up properly.

I used a half length of coil
(they come in 12-inch lengths) so wire cutters
were needed to cut the coil in two pieces.
I centered the coil on the width of the page.
This is a one-inch diameter coil.

Now the challenge will be to find a spot to
display and store a sketchbook this size,
since it is larger than most of my other journals.

Looking forward to next year's
Fake Journal...what or who
should I be next time?!

  1. That's a nifty binding tool. I went back through the posts about the journal. Looks like fun. Good for you for completing it. I don't often join these sorts of things because I know myself well enough to know I'll probably fall off the wagon about half way through the process.

  2. Excellent Dianne! 9 x 13" ... now that I know this I really can get a sense of your book! Binding journals are a lot of fun and I've always hesitated to bind anything spiral because I figured I'd have to send it out. This Cinch system looks great!

  3. WOW! the way you covered your journal! You have a way with drawing trees, you know that?

  4. A "fake journal" … fascinating. I explored your earlier posts to get to know the meaning. In any event, your drawings are charming. :) Thanks, too, for stopping by August heART and for your kind comment. Stop back by and share something with us!
